The sunshine state is home to beautiful beaches, women, and warm weather.

You can honestly say it’s the perfect place to ride an e-board!

But what are the rules and regulations regarding riding an electric skateboard in the state of Florida?

Electric Skateboards Are Legal In Florida

There is nothing in the statute that states electric skateboards are illegal in Florida.

Electric skateboards are essentially one step up from regular skateboards, meaning there’s no problem owning them whatsoever.

Where Can I Ride My E-Board In Florida?

Florida law states that all EPAMD (Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices) can be used:

  • ∙On a road or street where the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour or less.
  • ∙On a marked bicycle path.
  • ∙On any street or road where bicycles are permitted.
  • ∙At an intersection, to cross a road or street even if the road or street has a posted speed limit of more than 25 miles per hour.
  • ∙On a sidewalk, if the person operating the device yields the right-of-way to pedestrians and gives an audible signal before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.

Essentially, wherever you are allowed to ride a bicycle, you can ride your electric skateboard… (including bike lanes!)

Tip: Bike lanes are a super safe place to ride your e-board, so consider using them! They are made so that vehicles and pedestrians share the road in a safe manner.

Do I Need A License, Insurance, Or Registration?

Even though an electric skateboard is a motorized device, no paperwork is needed or required by the state of Florida.

Avoid Private Property

Private property is private for a reason.

This isn’t just for the state of Florida but for anywhere else in the country as well.

If it’s not your property, don’t ride on it…

Homeowners and property owners can get very defensive and angry regarding skateboarders riding on their property which can often lead to confrontations and the police getting involved.

Always ride in a public place like the street or the skate park and you’ll be just fine.

Follow Traffic Laws

No matter who you are: cyclist, pedestrian, vehicle…

You must follow traffic laws.

The same goes for you on your electric skateboard.

Common traffic laws include:

  • ∙Stopping at red lights and stop signs
  • ∙Giving right of way to pedestrians (when marked)
  • ∙Yielding at yield signs
  • ∙Riding on the right side of the road
  • ∙Moving over for emergency vehicles
  • ∙Not riding under the influence

Different Jurisdictions, Different Rules

Although this article looks at the laws and rules for the entire state of Florida, it doesn’t mean that all towns, cities, and counties are the same.

The examples below are just examples and not actual laws.

In Miami, riding on the sidewalk may be illegal.

In Broward County, riding on street may be illegal.

Different jurisdictions will have different rulesets in place.

That’s why it’s important to do your own research before you start riding.

Contact your local police department (non-emergency number) and ask them what are the rules regarding electric skateboards.

They very well might not have any…

If that’s the case, keep following the state's general guidelines.

Use Common Sense

It’s technically not a law, but it should be…

Just because something isn’t written in law, doesn’t mean you can be an idiot.

Speeding down a crowded sidewalk at 20mph is probably a bad idea and will end up with someone hurt.

Not moving over for a line of cars in crowded one-way street is another bad idea.

Use common sense and practice common safety!

After all, it takes one major accident to hit the news and have officials start implementing more laws on electric skateboards and other devices.

Respect others, have fun, and you’ll be just fine!
